ATV Unleashed is the consummate arcade racinggame. Though it's developed by Rainbow Studios andfeatures many of its innovations from past games suchas the Fury and Unleashed series, there is not onegame that packs as much entertainment punch into onepackage as you'll find here.MXvs. ATV is not a compilation nor is it a 'bestof.' It's a new game that puts bikes and four-wheelersin direction competition.
But it's much more thanthat. There are monster trucks, sand rails, bi-planesand even golf carts to race and destroy. If you getbored with NASCAR sims or powersliding around cityenvironments then this is the game for you.Thesheer number of modes and options is staggering. Youcan play alone, with a few friends in your livingroom or against the world online.
Modes include QuickRace, Career, Freestyle and both on and offline multi-playermodes. The tunes are composed of bone-crushing guitarriffs with a predilection for Cookie Monster-stylevocals. It suits the genre much better than any lamehip-hop tracks.Whenit comes to comparing and competing, the bikes andthe ATV are evenly matched. They both have great acceleration, sharp turning radiuses and the ability to preloada jump and catch some air. One area in which the ATVshould have the advantage is in sand.
Anyone that'sever ridden a dirt bike on sand knows what I'm talkingabout - two-wheeled vehicles were not made for sand. The game seems to ignore this fact and doesn't requireanymore skills to drive a bike over sand than it wouldover a solid track.Beginnersand intermediate players will get the most out ofthis game. The races become more difficult gradually.Getting started takes mere seconds.
Most players willbe able to handle themselves quite admirably for thefirst 15 races. If you're looking for more of a challengeyou can always increase the difficulty.I'mnot a big monster truck fan and this mode didn't influencethat conviction one iota. These vehicles require adifferent degree of control than I care to exercise.I like the tight and responsive control of the bikesand quads as opposed to the sluggish, top heavy trucks.Freestylemode lets you experiment with different vehicles, techniques and riders. There are 24 riders and forthe life of me I can't notice any difference. It'snot as though there is one super-rider and the restare duds. These are all professional drivers. Whenyou get into the more difficult races the outcomecan be determined, or undermined, by the slightestmistake.
That's my or your mistake, not the characterthat's sitting on your machine. If you're not a skilledplayer no rider is going to help you. Yes, some ofthe machines do perform certain tasks better thanothers. Some have faster acceleration while othersmay have better stability.
However, you will findyourself compensating for the differences naturally. That's the key to good gaming - flexibility. If youplay all the different modes and ride all of the vehiclesin this game you can't help but cultivate many valuableskills.
They may not get you through med school, butthey'll get you through having to watch reruns ofSurvivor with mom, dad and sis.Thegame is clean looking without too much superfluousdetail. It's better to be less busy than clutteredand Rainbow knows that, especially when designingfor the PS2. The graphics could have been significantlyupgraded for the Xbox. Technically there is nary aglitch to be had.
I can't say this is the best gameever made but as far as the arcade racing genre isconcerned it would be difficult to imagine how toimprove on it. Previewby VaughnHandsOn: Having went a few rounds with the latest buildI can at least say that Rainbow Studios is definitelyplaying it safe. Not to say MX Vs. ATV isn't a goodgame - it's a great playing game, but it's essentiallythe same game give or take a few tweaks that Rainbowhas been making since ATV Offroad Fury debuted backin 2001. Considering that both MX Unleashed and ATVOffroad have their fan base, it's nice to see themcome together for this project.Pre-Loadingthe suspension before a jump which was first introducedin ATV Offroad Fury is present and truth be told Ienjoy it so much that I can't play any other ATV orMX games properly if they don't feature it. It reallyis the only way to fly, excuse the pun.
The buildI received only featured the MX and ATV vehicles buttrust me when I tell you that you won't be disappointedwith the final roster which includes monster trucks, golf carts, sand rails, baja trucks, dune buggys, helicopters and even bi-planes. Control feels suppleand responsive, both characteristics of the attentionto detail and physics that Rainbow is known for.Visuallythe game is sharp and crisp and looks excellent evenon the aging PS2 hardware. ATV doesn't lookmiles ahead of previous efforts and there is someminor pop in, but on the whole it's an impressivelooking title able to feature a lot of onscreen actionwithout suffering.Thesheer amount of modes will keep any racing fan busyfor weeks and for those who aren't up to a challenge, the difficulty level can be selected. Online is availablefor both the PS2 and Xbox, but it wasn't availablefor me to test. The game is due out next week andwe suspect that dirtbike and ATV lovers are waitingwith baited breath. Tune in next week when we go atthe final review version.PreviousPreview: Fans of the ATV and MX games love speedand insane stunts.
Now it looks like Rainbow Studiosdecided the two would fit into one extreme game.Itmay just be something that fans of each series mayenjoy. I enjoy playing any game that features MX bikesand I also enjoyed the ATV series. So I think Rainbowand THQ just may have something here if it works asgood as it looks. Then again I also want a chanceto have fun online and this one also happens to providethat as well.Nowthe twist in the game is if it is in the game, itcan be raced against or driven.
